Once a month, a stretch of beach on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina fills with a sight that stops passersby cold.
Around 200 golden retrievers, shoulder to shoulder, pouring through the surf in every direction.
It’s called Golden Hour Charleston — and it is exactly as overwhelming as it sounds.
Two Goldens Made Fast Friends
It started with a simpler kind of playdate. Hannah Shaffer had a golden named Brinkley. Kendra Nedell had a golden named Eddy.
The dogs clicked instantly — with the total enthusiasm goldens are known for.
Their casual sessions grew, one invited dog at a time, until the circle had long outgrown anyone’s backyard.
The Moment They Made It Official
In March 2023, Shaffer and Nedell launched @goldenhourchs on Instagram to open things up.
They weren’t quite prepared for the response. “We were inundated with messages from fellow owners eager to join,” Shaffer said. “That’s when we knew we had to make it official.”
What had started as five dogs now had a waitlist.
The Scramble To Find Your Own Dog
Here’s the thing nobody warns you about before you walk onto a beach with 200 other golden retrievers.
You still have to find yours.
Brooks’s owner put it plainly: “It is essential to watch your dog because many pups look very similar.”
At full golden density, telling them apart becomes its own sport — every runner is golden, every splash sounds the same, and your dog has gone completely native.
Something Bigger Than The Beach
The monthly meetup lasts about an hour, timed carefully around the tides, with each date announced on Instagram ahead of time.
Owners bring toys and water; Sullivan’s Island handles the rest.
What keeps growing, Nedell says, isn’t just the headcount. “It’s developed into such a tight-knit community.” The dogs worked that out first. Their humans quietly followed.
It began as two goldens chasing each other on a beach.
Then ten. Then a hundred. Then two hundred.
Some ideas just need the right golden retrievers to run with them.
